Firstly, one should agree with the fact that mind never stops. Though it becomes thoughtless during sleep. Knowing and accepting the fact that mind never stops gives us better understanding about it. In this way, we won't have wrong desires such as I want to stop this thought, retaliating with your thoughts and try to make the mind quiet. The harder you try to stop those intrusive thoughts, the more worse situation gets.
It will soon turn out into battle between you and your mind. You just start reacting to your own thoughts which are far away from the reality at the present. The fact is you will not even know when you have gone so much deep into thoughts and your body will start reacting to those thoughts. Because the body doesn't know about the difference between reality and thoughts, it just releases the emotions. You can feel joy, sorrow, irritated or excited as per quality of thoughts of your mind.
Our mind is same as any other machine, once we come to know about how it works it becomes easy to operate it. And it doesn't mean at all that we don't get upset or sad ever in life. Hard times and problems are part and parcel of life. If we learn from our experiences, we just become better at dealing with our problems. Its about how we perceive different events of our life, whether we cry for the things didn't turn out well or learn from it. A wise person always knows that much of human grievances are just delusions. We assume and predict so negative at times, though the real problem always has a solution or sometimes we just need to be patient enough to let the storm pass.
It depends on us that what meaning we give to our experiences and it is through the knowledge that we perceive our experiences as good, bad or a lesson.
